Leveraging of Social Science and Applied Science for E-government Applications

This talk will focus on the need for a “marriage” between social science and applied science in e-government projects. The adoption of a user needs approach will be examined in particular, focusing on applications at the community level. A survey of selected social science research projects will be given in the areas of user needs and technology assessment. Connections will be shown to selected applications projects that relate to citizen engagement and participation in the areas of e-government, e-health and human web research. These projects are taking place at the National Research Council of Canada’s Institute of Information Technology. Biographical Information Dr. Andrew Reddick is a Senior Research Council Officer with the National Research Council of Canada’s Institute of Information Technology, based in Fredericton, Canada. Research work focuses on E-Government and E-Democracy, as well as issues relating to E-Health, E-Learning, Security, Privacy, and applications development. Previously, Andrew has worked as a policy and government relations consultant. Activities involved issues relating to public policy and regulation primarily in communications (broadcasting, telecommunications, Internet), but also in matters relating to transportation, financial services and privacy. He has a Ph.D. in Sociology and a Masters in Communications. Previously, Andrew has provided consulting services to a number of federal and provincial government departments and Ekos Research Associates Inc.. He has also acted as a policy advisor in the federal government, a Senior Consultant to the Public Interest Advocacy Centre in Ottawa, Canada and worked as a senior executive in the film and television industry. Andrew is currently a member of the Canadian federal government’s Government On-Line Advisory Panel and until recently was a Director of the Canadian Internet Registration Authority. He is a frequent public speaker on policy issues, and commentator for television, radio and newspapers.
